Connectivity in western Atlantic seep populations: Oceanographic and life-history processes underlying genetic structure
Faculty from Duke University, the University of Oregon, NC State University, the University of Louisiana, and the University College, Cork are pleased to offer up to 8 field traineeships for post-doctoral scientists or advanced graduate students interested in deep-sea research methods. Trainees will attend a series of lectures and discussions (in port and at sea) on ocean circulation modeling, larval biology and ecology, ecology of chemosynthetic ecosystems, phylogeography, population genetics and connectivity, Lagrangian transport models, and public outreach. On station at seeps of the Barbados Accretionary Wedge, post-docs will be trained in field methods, including submersible operations and sampling in the Alvin 4500-m-upgrade vehicle, MOCNESS plankton sampling, sample processing and database management, and mooring recoveries. In addition, post-docs or post-doc teams will be tasked with developing original outreach modules based on the scientific program and experience. Travel and shipboard expenses will be covered by the traineeship.
To be eligible, an applicant must
- be a post-doctoral investigator in a US university or research institution
- be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant
- can demonstrate the benefit of training in deep-sea science and field methods
- is likely to use Alvin or other deep-sea assets in his/her research
- submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation
- proposes a creative outreach medium/strategy
- contributes to a diverse interdisciplinary team of trainees
Application materials (cover letter, personal statement, 2 letters of recommendation, outreach proposal) are due 15 February 2012 (tentative). Announcement of awards will be made by 1 April 2012.
